Bar Code

linoleum print, wheat-paste

I chose to use an image that all of us are familiar with and place it on objects that would initiate a thinking process for the viewer. I used a linoleum print and carved out the bar code from that and printed it on to paper so that I could wheat-paste it. The bar code idea came from wandering the isles of Safeway one night in a different state of mind. I kept looking at how everything we purchase has a bar code so I began to think, what if I chose to place a bar code on anything would that make it purchasable? The main point that I was trying to get across is how we are able to slap a bar code onto anything and immediately assume that its purchasable because of the bar code. I feel that the bar code is a symbol in our society and that symbol represents consumption.
